Get a phone call from Shawn Johnson

My 12 year old is thrilled with the idea of a phone call from Shawn Johnson.  You could have her call you too!  Really you can!  🙂  Click here.

They played this the other night at the homecoming ceremony.   We thought it was funny.

Not a Good Time Manager

Tonight I grabbed one of our community education catalogs for fall.  I’m unsure why I did this since I am always busy.  Of course I had to read it.

Now I want to take classes, lots and lots of classes!  There are cookie decorating classes, felting, fused glass, knitting, sewing, belly dancing, yoga, declutter your space, puff pastry, quick comfort foods, 19th century bread baking, Norwegian baking, sign language, juggling, and spin your own yarn classes.  Those are just the classes that I am interested in taking.  There are MANY more classes.

Can you see my problem?  I have narrowed it down to knitting for beginners and the spin your own yarn.  The knitting because I can learn how to use the tools.  I am almost finished with a very basic knitting project, but I want to learn to make hats and mittens.  The spin your own yarn class because…well because it is just cool.  I’m not sure if I will have the opportunity to learn that again.  The big problem here is that they overlap for 4 weeks.  I don’t think I can do that.

I think Todd and N are going to take a beginning harmonica class together.  That will be good for them.  E is too young for anything, but the juggling class.  I am not sure that he is ready for that.  I think a year of OT and then we will try throwing things up above our head.

I’m going to call Julie and see if she wants to take knitting with me.  If she says yes then that is my answer.  Hopefully they will do the spin your own yarn class again.

Shawn Johnson a TRUE Olympian

I have been impressed with Shawn Johnson every time that I see or hear her.  I think what I like most about her is that she is really a happy kid.  She has a gentle charm about her whether she wins or loses.

Tonight we took the boys to see her “Welcome Home” celebration at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.  They expected 4,000 people and over 6,000 showed up.  It was a fun show.  OK, most of it was fun.  E did not care for the opening band at all (too loud.)  It was too loud for me and I don’t have sensory issues.

She shared some funny stories.  Apparently the pilot of her plane to NY (she was on Letterman), was so excited that she was on his flight, that he ended up hitting his head.  He had to be taken to the hospital for stitches.

She let all the little girls that asked her questions touch her medals.  She also shot out 20 autographed t-shirts.  N almost caught one, but it was grabbed out of his hands.

My favorite moment was when one of the kids asked her advice, and Shawn’s answer, “No matter what you do, make sure you are having fun.”  That is why I like Shawn.  Win or lose, Shawn is ALWAYS having fun.

So last weekend haunted me all week!

If you read my blog then you know last weekend I acted like the end of the world was coming and I needed to complete every task known to man.  By the way, I felt very accomplished and pretty darn pleased with myself on Sunday night.

I knew it was going to be a hard week.  I was missing most of our “Back to School” meeting on Monday to attend my cousin’s funeral.  I also missed a whole afternoon of prep.  I would have to be super organized in order to be ready for open house on Wednesday night at 5.  Previous years I had spent days, maybe even weeks, during the summer working.  Not this year, so I already felt behind.  I also had a board meeting at the theatre on Tuesday night.  So my time was lacking.

Now here is where the “glitch” in my week really occurred.  Sunday night while I was sleeping, every time I rolled over I woke up spinning.  I could hardly stand up on Monday.  The world just kept spinning in circles.  I was suffering from vertigo.  I STUPIDLY drove myself to work Monday morning (causing me to get motion sickness and nausea.)   After the funeral I went to the doctor.  I had double ear infection and a sinus infection.

It is really hard to work while the world spins around you.

I have gotten through the week.  I have to be honest though, it was by the seat of my pants.  I haven’t established my classroom quite the way that I want it.  I haven’t kept up with my boys’ first week of school like I wanted.

But it is over and Monday we start over.  With any luck my feet (and head) will be a little more firmly planted.  🙂

I wanted to share this recipe!

Ok these are the most wonderful cookies!  I just loved them when a grandma at the theatre made them for intermission treats.  She shared the recipe with me, and I am sharing with you.

Cowboy Cookies

  • 2 sticks of room temp oleo
  • 1 cup Brown Sugar
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1tsp soda
  • 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 1 cup coconut
  • 2 cups oatmeal
  • 2 cups flour
  • bag of choc chips
  • nuts of choice

“Oven at 325 degrees.  Cream oleo, sugars, and eggs–add other ingredients.  Might need more flour.  Sometimes I use half choc chips and half peanut butter chips.  I put the cookies in the freezer after baking–they are always just like the first day! “

Now those are her directions.  The bottoms of my cookies were burning before the tops were done, so I upped it to 350 degrees.  Then it worked fine.  I may try to cut down the sugar the next time I make them.  These are the cookies that I made this weekend to freeze.

Whew! I need a vacation after this weekend!

I can’t believe how much I accomplished this weekend.  It is amazing how it all came together.  It wasn’t all fun, but I tried for it all not to be work either.  There were definite sad moments.  I couldn’t stop crying at church and the visitation was just difficult, but I made it.

Now I am going to put away the last of the laundry, get my book and take a nice long bath.

Less than 48 hours to go until work and I’m adding to my list

  • create new ipod playlist  I will have to post this later.  I giggled as the most listened song on my playlist (seriously it has played 513 times!) is “Hot” by Smash Mouth, or as it is known at my house, “The Hotwheels Song.”  I don’t believe I am the one that has played it that many times.  Truthfully I think someone had it on repeat and left it on all night!  🙂  I love my boys!
  • take back cans and bottles  gross!
  • clean out emails (my yahoo account has over 6000.)

I have 72 hours until I go back to work

I am in crunch time.  I have to go back to work on Monday.  I have many things I want to do this weekend.  So I decided if I made a list I may have a better chance of completing these things.  There is no way I can get it all done, but I’ll be happy if come close.  (As I go I will cross of those things completed!)

  • Go in to school and get all of my new technology set up.  (I have a  –like a smartboard–WOO HOO!!!!!) I really was sort of doing a happy dance as I typed that.  I’m a little excited. Evan tried to do this for me, but the district didn’t sent the cord that hooks all of this up to the computer.  URGH!  He did everything, but that cord though.  Thank you Evan!

  • Work on my giant sewing pile
  • Clean out purse

I think this is it.  I’m fairly certain that I can get a lot of this done.  However I will admit the house clean thing will only happen because of my sister.    Someday I will need to write an “Ode to Susan”.    So how about you?  What are your weekend plans?  I just realized that it is almost 7:25.  I better get a move on!  🙂

Thursday Nights at My House–My Apologies to All of Our Neighbors

It is Thursday night.  I can feel my floor vibrating.  I can feel my chair vibrating.  Heck, I’m vibrating!  It’s band night at my house.  My husband is a drummer for a Alternative Christian Rock band.  He is an amazing drummer.  Right now I have four grown men in my basement getting ready for a Christian Music Festival in a week.  They sound pretty good.  My favorite song is their cover of the Flaming Lips, Fight Test.  Fight Test sounds uncannily like Cat Stevens, Father and Son.  OK it isn’t a Christian Song, but it is a FABULOUS song.

This is Joe’s back.  Joe plays among his many instruments, the keyboards.  Joe and his wife are amazing.  They have spearheaded a group to raise money to equip the local movie theatres for the deaf and blind.  I will point out that they are neither deaf nor blind.  They just saw the need.  How can you not love that???

Oh did I mention we had new neighbors move in next door yesterday?  I hope their house isn’t vibrating.  That wouldn’t be a very good first impression.  It’s a good thing I gave them some fresh cucumbers from our garden yesterday.  🙂

Oh and by the way, I found my camera.  Here is my haircut.  It’s short, but I think I like it.

I know it is hard to see my hair.  Sorry it’s the best I can do by myself.  Everyone else is busy doing something important (band practice.)

Super Mom–My Power, Finder of Lost Things-at least it used to be!

I am sitting here knowing that I want to blog today about something frivolous and unimportant, my new haircut.  However I can’t find my camera!  Telling you about my new haircut without a picture doesn’t seem to have the same punch.

Usually I know where most everything is, but I seriously can’t find it.  This is driving me a little crazy.  I guess I need to clean my house (and probably my car.)  Then if I don’t find it I really have a problem.

Wish me luck!  Oh, and by the way, I really like my new haircut.  It’s really, really short! (Picture to come later.  🙂 )
